Winter Driving in Sarajevo and Bosnia

Winter transforms Bosnia and Herzegovina into a snow-covered wonderland, but it also changes the driving conditions significantly. Temperatures in Sarajevo regularly drop below -10C from December through February, and mountain passes can receive heavy snowfall. With the right preparation and a winter-equipped rental car, driving in winter is perfectly safe and opens up access to some of the most beautiful scenery in the region.

Winter Driving Essentials

  • Winter tyres: Mandatory by law from November 1 to April 15. All Airport.ba vehicles are fitted with approved winter tyres during this period
  • Snow chains: Required for some mountain passes, available from Airport.ba at no extra charge
  • Headlights: Must be on at all times during winter months, even during daylight
  • Fuel: Keep the tank at least half full in case of delays on mountain roads
  • Road conditions: Check the BiH Auto-Moto Club website for real-time road condition updates

Routes to Ski Resorts

The two main ski resorts near Sarajevo are easily accessible by car. Jahorina is 30 km southeast of the city (approximately 40 minutes), while Bjelasnica sits 25 km southwest (approximately 35 minutes). Both roads are regularly ploughed during ski season, but an SUV or crossover provides extra confidence on steep sections. Vlasic, another popular ski destination near Travnik, is about 100 km northwest. All these resorts have ample free parking at the base areas.
